Flash Fiction Freebie — Pulp Fiction

Candy reached for the handrail as she approached the entrance to Atlantic Avenue Station. Her hands shook and her weak legs threatened to fold. Just get on the express train and head home, she thought. Cigar smoke drifted across the entrance in wispy cancerous clouds blown by a trio of men in sweat-stained undershirts loitering along the stairwell barrier. Her torn dress revealed her white bra-strap and a stinging red welt on her exposed alabaster shoulder. They didn’t cat-call or whistle. Instead, tamed, the stinking sentinels looked away as she descended. The residents of the street stared in silence at the bleeding wreckage she left behind. Blocks away, she heard a siren. Meat wagon or Paddy wagon, it didn’t matter. She just had to get home before Donnie; there’d be Hell to pay if his dinner was late.

At least her bookie’s account was square. Paid in lead.
